Cold Weather Golf Tips

Just because it's getting colder, that doesn't mean golf is over for the season! With proper preparation you can have just as much fun at the end of the season as the summer, and play just as well. After all, you've had all year to hone the game so it should be in good shape still!
First off we need to layer ourselves properly. I see so many golfers doing this wrong by layering up on the top half and wearing minimal layering on the bottom, sometimes even shorts! This is backwards if you want to be able to rotate properly. Every layer you put on the top half will limit your rotation a little more, or if its too baggy, the butt end of the club can get caught. What you should do is layer up on the bottom half first, and keep the top half lighter. Get a pair of long johns, or UnderArmor leggings to put under your pants and you will find yourself staying much warmer while keeping your ability to rotate.
Next is stretching properly. When its cold out, your muscles contract which limits rotation and increases the odds of injury. Make sure to stretch your hammys, quads and groin. The hip and lower torso area is paramount to proper rotation. My favorite stretch is the iron cross or lying leg over. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-BuRpLixls
Finally is the equipment. This is the least important but can still help you score better. First, keep your golf bag in a warm place. Cold golf balls do not fly as far. Second, consider using a lower compression golf ball. Cold weather makes the ball compress less, so a lower compression ball will help alleviate that.
Hopefully this convinces you to keep playing well into fall, and in early spring as well when the course opens up again(if you live in the midwest or northeast). Play well and have fun! Remember, it is just a game after all.
